Taxes: Kiplinger’s names Cheyenne as nation’s top tax-friendly city. Kiplinger’s Personal Finance magazine, named Cheyenne the "No. 1 Tax-Friendly City " in the United States. Adding income taxes, property taxes, sales taxes and gasoline taxes, Kiplinger’s hypothetical family of four in Cheyenne would pay $2,220 in state and local taxes. By comparison, Bridgeport, Connecticut's tax burden is $12,627 for the same hypothetical family. Factors contributing to Cheyenne’s first-place status include Wyoming being one of seven states having no state income tax, low property taxes and a below-average sales tax of 5 percent. For the full article, consult Kiplinger's Personal Finance magazine, "The Great Divide", pages 105-106.
No State Income Tax (personal or corporate), No Inventory Tax, State Sales Tax is 5%, and Property Tax is 77.31 mills on 9.5% of residential market value.
Why are taxes so low? Wyoming is one of only three states in the Union with a budget SURPLUS! We have over $4.5 billion upon which we receive interest to pay for highways, schools, libraries, parks, etc. In 2007 alone, Wyoming posted another billion dollar surplus. So the state doesn't need to charge its residents any income tax or high property taxes or unreasonable sales taxes to pay for government or services.
